Si no aparece «Permitir ajustes restringidos»
To allow restricted settings on Android, go to Settings, Apps, choose the app, tap the ⋮ menu at the top right and tap Allow restricted settings. You'll then be able to enable accessibility or notification access for it. Below we explain it in detail, and also what to do if the option doesn't appear.
What restricted settings are
Since Android 13, apps installed from a file rather than from an official store can't receive the most sensitive permissions until you expressly authorise it. The most common are accessibility and notification access. If you try, the switch appears greyed out with the message “Restricted setting”.
It isn't a bug: it's protection against malicious apps that try to sneak in with those permissions to read your screen or your messages.
How to allow restricted settings, step by step
- Try to enable the permission once, even if it's greyed out. That way Android records the attempt and unlocks the option.
- Go to Settings and open Apps.
- Find the app and open it.
- Tap the ⋮ menu in the top right-hand corner.
- Tap Allow restricted settings and confirm with your PIN or fingerprint.
- Go back to the permission, for example Accessibility, and enable it: it will no longer be greyed out.
If “Allow restricted settings” doesn't appear
First, make the attempt
The option only appears after you've tried to enable the permission at least once. If you go straight to the app's info page, the ⋮ menu will be empty.
On Xiaomi, Samsung and other brands
Some Android skins put the options somewhere else. Try typing “restricted settings” into the Settings search bar. If your phone is a Xiaomi or OPPO, then also check autostart, or the app will close on its own.
Is it safe to allow restricted settings?
It is if you trust the app. Accessibility lets an app see the screen and tap for you, and notification access lets it read your notifications: that's why Android protects them. Only do it with apps whose origin you know, and check from time to time which apps have these permissions.
What are these permissions for in a remote control app? We explain it in how to control an Android phone from your PC.
Which permissions are restricted settings
The most common are two, and they're exactly the ones that remote control and messaging apps need:
- Accessibility: lets an app see what's on screen and act on your behalf.
- Notification access: lets an app read the notifications that arrive on the phone.
Depending on the Android version and the manufacturer, other special permissions may also appear as restricted. The process for unlocking them is the same.
Why Android does this
Many scams involve persuading someone to install an app from a link and grant it accessibility. With that permission, the app can read codes and press buttons. Restricted settings add a deliberate step: you have to go to the app's info page yourself and confirm it with your PIN.
How to tell whether an app is trustworthy
- You know who makes it, and it was given to you by the developer itself or by your company.
- It explains what it wants each permission for before asking.
- It only asks for permissions that make sense for what it does.
- It wasn't sent to you by a stranger via SMS, WhatsApp or email.
How to remove the permission later
- Go to Settings, Accessibility and turn the app off.
- In Settings, Notifications, Notification access, turn it off as well.
- If you no longer use it, uninstall it: the permissions disappear with it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is accessibility greyed out on Android?
Because the app wasn't installed from an official store, and Android 13 or later restricts that permission until you authorise it on the app's info page.
Where is “Allow restricted settings”?
In Settings, Apps, the app in question, the ⋮ menu at the top right. It appears after you've tried to enable the permission.
Can it be restricted again?
Yes: just turn off the app's permission. And if you uninstall it, the authorisation disappears.
